A medley of people sat in one of the more "living room" like areas in the Fire Nation palace, all looking a combination of nervous, confused and worried. Sokka and Suki sat  on the couch, with Toph on one side and Teo in his wheelchair to her right. Haru was sitting in an easy chair, and beside him was Mai, who was insisting on standing, arms crossed and leaning back against the wall. Ty Lee was nervously sitting in the window seat, continually fiddling with her hair, unable to sit still, and even Iroh looked a little worried.

But the most worried looking of everyone was definitely the Avatar himself.

Aang was pacing back and forth, hands tucked in his sleeves, eyes on the ground, practically glaring holes through the wood at his feet. He didn't look angry, and he didn't say a word, just kept on pacing back and forth back and forth without any signs of wanting to stop. If the situation had been any different, one of the people present would have told him to sit the hell down, but right now, they kind of figured he had the right.

In the next room over from this one lay perhaps the most important person in Aang's whole world, and his female best friend was in there too. The Fire Lord, Zuko, had, inexplicably, fallen "ill" for lack of a better term, though no one was entirely sure just WHAT was wrong with him. Katara, who acted as something of the family doctor nowadays, had been called in by an overprotective Aang and the minute she arrived, the others came trailing after her. The seemed to do that whenever one of the group was in trouble, just all amass themselves in the danger zone and wait for the outcome. It may have been almost eight years since they won this war, but they were still an impossible to break unit.

And they were all protective when it came to their favorite world leader, I.E., Zuko. He was the best thing that had happened to the Fire Nation in decades and no one could dispute that, even his more cynical council members. The only reason that the entire court and half the nation wasn't pounding down the palace doors was because they were taking extra precautions to keep this quiet and out of whatever press there was. The last thing needed at the nearly-decade mark in their healing period was news the Fire Lord had fallen ill. Even this far in, there were still rebel groups and people who wanted to end Zuko's life. Which was crazy and stupid because then they'd have a very pissed off Avatar to deal with, and that never served anyone.

Still, the only thing perhaps worse than a pissed off Avatar was a nervous one. He kept unconsciously kicking up breezes around the room, and more than once the water floated rather inexplicably out of someone's glass. They were lucky all the candles were out and there wasn't any earth around to bend by accident or they would have been in some serious trouble.

"Aang, for the love of Agni, pacing isn't helping."

Of all the people in the world who Aang had learned to listen to, no one had really expected one of them to be Mai. Mai and Aang had never really talked before he moved into the Fire Nation palace and became Zuko's lover, but after the fact, they became thick as thieves.

It had started out more as a rivalry, naturally, though a soft spoken one. Mai was still a little sore over Zuko turning out to be in love with another male, but she took it in stride, as any strong person would. After all, all she really wanted was for her friend to be happy, and she knew she'd get over it eventually. They were, after all, only teenagers. But when Aang moved in and started taking the best friend position, well, that was a little much for her. Over the next year, the two of them silently battled it out over the Fire Lord, and in the end, Zuko had told them, rather exasperatedly, that they could BOTH be his best friend and right hand (wo)men, and to stop acting like children.

By the time they'd called a grudging truce, the two had gotten closer and by now they were as much a unit as Mai and Ty Lee had once been. Mai had taken up the place of Zuko's bodyguard, advisor, and escort, and Aang was, well, he was Aang. There wasn't much more to be said about that.

So when she spoke up, he actually stopped pacing and looked over at her, a frustrated expression on his face.

"I know Mai, but I can't HELP it..."

Mai kicked off the wall and walked over to the now almost fully matured Avatar, wrapping an arm around his shoulders much like an older sister would.

"Aang, I know you're trying your best to stay calm, but at this point it might just be better for you to drink a glass of fire whiskey and call it a day." she said gently.

"I don't drink."

"You do sometimes."

Aang didn't argue, just sighed, shoulders slumping, looking rather deflated.

"I'm just really worried. I don't know what's wrong with him, it was completely out of the blue. One day he's fine and then suddenly he's not, I have no idea what happened to him..."

Mai patted his shoulder, about to say something to reassure her friend, when the door slammed open.

All eyes turned to the figure now standing in the doorway, panting, brown hair a bit disheveled and blue eyes wide in a mix of excitement and shock.

"Guys!" she said, after catching her breath. "You're never going to believe this!"

"What?" Sokka asked hurriedly. "What is it Katara?"

"Yeah Sugarqueen." Toph said, sitting up straight. "What's wrong with Firecracker?"

"Wrong?" Katara laughed. "NOTHING is WRONG with him!"

Confusion rippled around the room.

"Then..." Ty Lee began. "What...?"

"Zuko is PREGNANT!"

There was collective silence around the room for a good two and a half minutes, wide eyes blinking at Katara like she'd just grown a second head.

"....You're not kidding. Are you."

She shook her head at Aang, still grinning ear to ear. The Avatar continued to stare at her, completely speechless, before he slumped down on the nearest empty chair and demanded someone bring him a fire whiskey. Now.
I don't really DO Mpreg....so this is weird for me. But, well, I could think of nothing better and the plot was bugging me.
